APA Voice 유권자등록 캠페인에 참여 | Participated In APA Voice Voter Registration Campaign

지난 6월 11일 (목), KMAC 한민족비전센터는 고마운 요청을 받고 민권센터가 주최하는 2026년 APA Voice 유권자등록 캠페인에 참여를 하게 되었습니다. 민권센터를 선두로 하고 총 4개의 다민족 공익협회들이 든든한 지원군으로 나서 지역사회의 유권자등록을 돕고 또 선거의 중요함을 지역시민들에게 깨우쳐주는 뜻깊은 시간이었습니다.

이번 행사는 협력협회이자 피트니스센터인 플러싱 YMCA 2층에서 개최되었는데요, 불가마속에 들어가있는듯한 푹푹 찌는 날씨에도 부지런하게 운동하러 와주시는, 삶에 긍정적인 태도를 소유하신 지역시민 분들에 의해 즐거움이 많았던 행사로 기억됩니다. 연령대는 고등학생으로부터 70세 어르신까지 다양하였으며, 자칫 광고성 마케팅으로 오해하고 지나칠수 있었던 캠페인 부스를 그냥 지나치지 않고 먼저 다가와주시고 또 유권자등록 컨설팅을 세심히 받고 당일 등록까지 저희의 도움을 받고 완성해주셨던 수많은 분들에게 더할수 없는 고마움을 느꼈습니다.

APA Voice는 이 날 40여명에 가까운 지역시민들에게 유권자등록 컨설팅과 유권자등록을 해드렸는데요, 다양한 배경을 가진 다양한 민족들이 저희의 기대치를 훨씬 넘어서 선거결과가 우리의 커뮤니티와 시 전체에 초래하는 영향에 대해 행동학적인 관심을 보여주셔서 놀라움을 멈출수 없던 하루였습니다. 기록한 수치만 40여명이지 사실 저희가 유권자등록여부를 물었을 때 이미 등록을 하셨다라고 미소로 답해주시던 능동성 있으신 분들까지 합세하면 그 수는 60여명을 기록했습니다.

저희도 이민 1세대, 혹은 1.5세대의 결합체로서 의식주가 늘 처음이 되고 주가 되어야하는 이민초기의 피할수 없는 고난을 직접적으로, 혹은 어깨너머로 경험하였지만, 그 의식주의 필요성을 넘어서 정치적, 문화적인 수양을 동시에 탑재하시고 잘 따라와주신 지역시민이 정말 사랑스럽다라는 생각이 드는 하루였습니다. 이런 분들과 직면하여 그 분들의 긍정적인 에너지와 적극적인 참여성을 확인할수 있도록 기회를 준 민권센터와 APA Voice의 모든 협력협회들에게 감사의 마음을 전하며, 또 땀흘리는 몇시간의 여정을 통해 우정도 확인할수 있었던 하루의 따뜻한 "협우"의 온기도 함께 전합니다.

On Thursday, June 11, KMAC Korean Minjok Aspiration Center was honored to participate in the 2026 APA VOICE Voter Registration Campaign, organized by the MinKwon Center. Together with four multicultural nonprofit organizations, we joined forces to help community members register to vote while emphasizing the importance of civic participation and democratic engagement.

The event was held on the second floor of the Flushing YMCA, one of Minkwon's valued partner organizations. Despite the sweltering summer heat, the atmosphere remained energetic and welcoming as local residents of all ages—from high school students to seniors in their seventies—stopped by the campaign booth. Many people who could have easily mistaken the booth for a promotional display instead chose to approach us, ask thoughtful questions, receive personalized voter registration guidance, and complete their voter registration on the spot. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who took the time to engage with us and demonstrate their commitment to civic participation.

During the event, APA VOICE and its partner organizations provided voter registration consultations and successfully assisted nearly 40 community members in registering to vote. Even more encouraging was the strong level of civic awareness demonstrated by residents from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Many others who visited our booth proudly shared that they had already registered, bringing the total number of meaningful voter engagement conversations to approximately 60 people. Their enthusiasm and understanding of how elections shape both local communities and the city as a whole far exceeded our expectations.

As an organization made up mainly of first- and 1.5-generation Korean immigrants, KMAC Korean Minjok Aspiration Center understands the many challenges that newcomers face while building a new life in the United States. During those early years, securing housing, employment, and stability often takes priority. Yet this event reminded us that civic participation, cultural understanding, and community involvement are equally important parts of building a strong and thriving society. It was inspiring to meet so many residents who embraced these values with optimism, responsibility, and enthusiasm.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the MinKwon Center, APA VOICE, and all of the partner organizations that made this meaningful event possible. Beyond promoting voter registration, the campaign strengthened friendships among participating organizations and reinforced our shared commitment to empowering our communities through civic engagement. We look forward to continuing this important work together and helping build a stronger, more inclusive future for all.
